BAHIR DAR, Nov. 22 (WIC) – The Ethiopian Democratic Unity Party (EDUP) charged district and kebele officials today of harassing its candidates in two zones of Amhara State, contesting in the
upcoming elections.Party representative for western and eastern Gojjam, Dereje Kebede told WIC today that 14 of its candidates contesting for seats in the Council of Peoples Representatives and the State Council have been
subjected to imprisonment and beatings by officials of district and Kebele administration.
He charged particularly the officials of Yilmana Densa District in western Gojjam and the Mertu Lemariam kebele leadership
in Eastern Gojjam for excessive violation of the constitutional right of the party and its candidates.
The party representative complained about the failure on the part of the zonal officials to take corrective
measures despite the party's formal protest against the harassments.
Officials of the zonal justice and security departments described the allegation as baseless saying that investigations into the matter has failed
to prove the charges lodged by the party.
It said however that certain unruly individuals apprehended by police as a result of their engagement in acts of public disorder were known to have traded in the name of the
party.
